– 45 years ago (1969)
NHL Referee Bruce Hood was the guest speaker at the 12th
Annual Erin Minor Hockey Banquet. He was introduced by 15-year-old Terry
Gregson (NHL referee, 1981-2004).
Minor Hockey trophies went to the Pee-Wee Leafs, with Coach Ralph
Marshall, Helper Craig Kirk and Captain Tim Herbison, and the Bantam Kings,
with Coach Les Indoe and Captain Terry Gregson.
Lois Marshall performed the Hayden Allegretto in A Major at the
Canadian Trinity Teachers Association Recital in Toronto. She received the
Silver Medal for highest honours in her grade.
Sue Maxwell reported that cadets from Erin District High School went
to Canadian Forces Base Borden. The most successful on the firing range were
Cadet Bombardier Jim Reid, Cadet Bombardier Doug Smith, Cadet Lieutenant Wayne
Case and Cadet Sergeant Rick Curran, with honourable mention to Cadets Lea
Thomas, Rob McEachern and Gord Smith.
At the Kiwanis Music Festival, Miriam Root won the Lloyd Yorke
trophy in solo church singing, and placed first in the concert solo class.

– 35 years ago (1979)
The foundation has been poured for a new warehouse and sales office
for Ed Stewart Garage & Equipment Ltd. The business will move from Main
Street to Hwy. 24 in Brisbane.
Another $10,674 is needed to pay for the Erin Community Centre.
Co-chairmen Peter Durksen and Paul Dray are planning more special fundraising
events.
Joyce Graham reported that Hillsburgh Lion Warren Wicks was elected
as deputy district governor at a convention in Stratford.
The Belfountain-Rockside Women’s Institute celebrated its 75th
anniversary, with President Mrs. Ellis Lester and Mrs. J.C. MacMillan (a member
since 1915) cutting the cake.
Ken Pinkney removed the last logs from the bridge he had helped
build in 1976 over the Credit River behind the municipal office, leading the
Woolen Mills Conservation Area. Erin Village was forced to take the bridge down
after repeated attacks by vandals rendered it unsafe.
Federal Liberal candidate Harry Green opened a campaign office in
Hillsburgh across the road from the Community Centre, and was welcomed by local
Liberal organizer Kenneth Leitch. Green supports Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s
promise to repatriate the constitution.

– 25 years ago (1989)
An Advocate editorial warned of stagnation if the village didn’t
find a way to grow: “With the Village of Erin about to burst at the seams,
amalgamation with the Township seems the only viable solution.”
Frank and Ivan Gray presented a $10,000 cheque to Village Reeve
Terry Mundell and Clerk Pat McDermott, for the Erin and Community Lions Club
Building Fund.
Erin District High School presented the musical comedy A Funny Thing
Happened on the Way to the Forum, starring: Barry Pletch, Doug Stride, Janey
Arnold, Tom Redekop, Mike Kopinak, Mike Pickett, Phil Van Manen, Marg Graham
and Jeff Agnew.
The Belfountain-Rockside Women’s Institute celebrated its 85th
anniversary. Photographed for the occasion were President Helen Kirk, Margaret
Duggan, Isobel Foster, Mary McLeod, Joan Wilson, Sarah Kiteley, Alma Corbett,
Bernice Trimble and Elizabeth MacMillan, a member since 1915.
