Dementia series available at EWCS

As published in The Erin Advocate

A six-part series on dementia has been created by the Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington, and donated to East Wellington Community Services (EWCS).

A grant from the Guelph Community Foundation to the Alzheimer Society allowed the creation of a lecture-style series, with presentations ranging in length from 35 to 47 minutes. Topics include: Overview of Dementia, Brain Changes, Communication, Approach, Responsive Behaviour, and Caregiving.

Erika Westcott of East Wellington Community Services.
“We work closely with the Alzheimer Society,” said Erika Westcott, Manager of Community Services and Volunteers at EWCS. The agency provides education and support to people with Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, and their families.

“We’re strengthening the resources, and people don’t have to travel far to get them,” said Robin Smart of the Alzheimer Society. More than 10,000 people in the Waterloo-Wellington region live with some form of dementia.

There is no charge to borrow any of the DVDs – call Sherri Plourde (EWCS) at 519-833-0087 for details.

The society raises funds and provides opportunities for people to volunteer and participate in research. For more information, go to www.alzheimer.ca/ww.
